The Highway Code should be taught in schools to reduce road accidents~ Tapiwa Ndewere

Safety on the roads, is it for motorists or for pedestrians or any road users? Should the Highway Code be taught to everyone in school and be part of the updated curriculum? Such are questions that keep pestering my mind. Day in day out we blame our roads for robbing us of our beloved friends and relatives, but it the road at fault or our mindset as road users.

An ECD child understands that a red traffic light means stop but as he (grows) to be a taxi / kombi / driver the color Red vanishes from his dictionary thus his mind robot remains green and doesn't stop anyhow at a red robot it's such a shame.

You see a grown man with earphones plugged in all ears boasting around the city crossing busy roads. You wonder if he has view mirrors that alert him of dangers from behind is it childhood error or it is believed road safety is for those with vehicles. Vendors with toddler sit with arms folded just by the road side, the toddler staggering in and out of the road not even bothered by the big monsters ( vehicles) that move up and down in front of him.

As the child grows up there is nothing like road safety in his own understanding. People relax in driveways and parking areas, is it because we have limited areas to relax at or we have a corrupt mindset that safety on the roads is for those who drive only.

Let it be known from birth that life is precious and the importance of preserving through practicing safe road use. Also let it be compulsory for all school children to know and practice safe ways of using the roads for it starts from somewhere.

Yours Concerned
